Whistleblowing Law and Practice

UCD Sutherland School of Law is pleased to announce the introduction of a module in Whistleblowing Law and Practice starting in January 2019. The module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of whistleblowing law and practical issues arising from it, and will be particularly suitable for solicitors, barristers, trade union officials, HR professionals, designated officers for receiving protected disclosures, and others dealing with employment law.

Lauren Kierans, a practising barrister who specialises in protected disclosures, will deliver the module over 12 weeks in UCD.

The module can be taken on its own for a professional Certificate in Law. Students taking the module can also use credits from the module towards a Professional Diploma in Law or LLM in Law.

The module is open to all professionals with an undergraduate degree in law or a social science discipline. Relevant experience in the work environment may also qualify candidates for admission.

Schedule:                  One 2 hour class each week over 12 weeks
Time:                         6pm to 8pm each Tuesday
Dates:                        22 January to 23 April, 2019 (with two week study break from 11 to 25 March)     
                             
 
Continuous Professional Development:

CPD of 24 hours will be available (subject to individual professional body approval).
 
Topics will include:

·         The essential elements of a protected disclosure
·         The stepped disclosure regime
·         Protections for whistleblowers
·         Procedure for redress
·         Whistleblowing policies and procedures
·         Whistleblowing in the public sector
·         EU and international whistleblowing law perspectives
 
Assessment: One assignment during the module and one two hour examination at the end of the module
