An Taoiseach Enda Kenny Celebrates Science Week 2015(posted 08/11/15)

November 8th to 15th is Science Week and 2015 marks the 20th year of this celebration of science in Ireland. To celebrate this occassion, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny hosted an event at the Department of An Taoiseach with academics and students from throughout the country.

Science Week Ireland is an annual event which first took place in 1996 and has grown to a programme of over 800 events scheduled across the country. It aims to make science more interesting and accessible to children and adults alike. It highlights how science, technology and engineering are hugely relevant to us all in our everyday lives, lead to interesting and exciting career options and develop creativity in our children.

Speaking at the celebration, An Taoiseach noted that "Science, technology and innovation have been at the core of our economic recovery. I am delighted, together with Minister English and Science Foundation Ireland, to celebrate the 20th Science Week by seeing first hand some of the astonishing work that is happening across the country and across all of our society from the students and teachers to the leading researchers in our universities and companies."

As director of the City of Physics public science campaign, Dr Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin from the School of Mathematics & Statistics in UCD was invited to attend and spoke to An Taoiseach of the importance of including science as part of our everyday lives.

City of Physics is running from Dublin until November 27th and has a number of public events and advertisements running throughout the city in order to spark public curiosity of physics in the world around us and to incorporate science as part of our everyday culture.
