The International Union of Theoretical & Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) organised this major symposium at the UCD School of Mechanical & Materials Engineering from July 7-9. Under the chairmanship of Professor Michael Gilchrist, an invited group of international experts in materials, biomechanics, emergency medicine and equipment design from USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa and across Europe discussed fundamental issues and application areas of sports impact biomechanics. The symposium sought to address how the human body and its various limbs, organs and tissues respond to varying levels of impact force and how the effects of these forces can be ameloriated through judicious design of protective equipment.
