James Malachy O’Connor was born in Limerick. He was educated at the Crescent College, Limerick, and then entered UCD, where he had a distinguished undergraduate career. James then studied for another two years to pursue his interest in science, philosophy, and languages, obtaining a BA in 1907 and then graduating with his MB. BCh. BAO Degree in 1909.

Throughout his career he was actively involved in the regulation of the medical profession in Ireland, serving on the Medical Research Council of Ireland from its foundation in 1937 until shortly before his retirement in 1952.

James was deemed an able administrator, as Dean of the UCD Medical Faculty from 1941 to 1956. He represented UCD on the Medical Registration Council from 1945 to 1956 and was the Irish representative on the General Medical Council from 1945 to 1960.

He was awarded an honorary DSc. in 1956 and many of his papers were published in the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy. James was an active member of the RIA (Royal Irish Academy) and was elected to the MRIA in 1930, served on the ruling Council from 1940 to 1944 and was Vice-President twice from 1949 to 1952 and from 1958 to 1963 and President from 1955 to 1958.
