Professor William Powderly was appointed Dean at UCD School of Medicine in Sept 2006.

William Powderly is the Dr J. William Campbell Professor of Medicine and the Larry J Shapiro Director of the Institute for Public Health at Washington University, St Louis, US.

At the Institute, William’s focus has been on translating scientific advances to a wider population to improve public health.  Under his direction the Institute has focused on Implementation Science, Community Partnerships, Economic and Policy Research and Global Health to broaden the impact of discovery science and address disparities in health outcomes.

William is also Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Washington University School of Medicine.

William has been actively involved in HIV-related clinical research for the last thirty years. He has been a member of numerous advisory groups on HIV and Infectious Diseases for the NIH (National Institutes of Health), the US CDC (Centre for Disease Control and Prevention), the Canadian Institute for Health Research, and the EMEA (European Medicines Evaluation Agency). He is the author of over 400 original manuscripts, reviews and book chapters.

William is a Fellow of the RCPI (Royal College of Physicians) In Ireland and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and in 2017, he was President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

William Powderly graduated from UCD School of Medicine in 1987.
