
BRAF Mutation Less Common Among Melanoma Patients in Ireland
The BRAF mutation believed to drive disease in about half of patients with melanoma was found to occur at a significantly lower frequency in patients with melanoma in Ireland, according to data presented at the AACR Annual Meeting 2013, held in Washington, D.C., April 6-10.

Nobel Laureate Launches Mater’s Oncology / Haematology Unit
Today, Professor James D Watson, best known as a co-discoverer of the structure of the DNA molecule and Nobel Peace Prize laureate officially launched the Mater’s state-of-the-art Haematology / Oncology ward, in the new Whitty Building. This new combined clinical facility greatly increases capacity and treats patients with cutting edge therapies.
UCD & Molecular Medicine Ireland Hold Inaugural Biobanking Course
Molecular Medicine Ireland, in partnership with UCD School of Medicine & Medical Science, held its first Biobanking Course in the UCD Clinical Research Centre (CRC) at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital from 17–19 April. The course was run in conjunction with the Biorepositories module of UCD’s Graduate Certificate in Clinical and Translational Research.UCD and Mater Hospital Collaborate on ED-based Rapid HIV Testing Project
A new rapid HIV-screening programme offered to patients who present at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Emergency Department in Dublin has already seen 2,250 people volunteer to check their HIV status. The project is a collaboration between UCD the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, and the Jacobi Medical Centre, New York.
School Announces Research Opportunities in Rheumatology
The School is pleased to announce two funded research opportunities in Rheumatology within the team of the incoming Professor of Rheumatology, Prof Gerry Wilson at the UCD School of Medicine & Medical Science. Prof Wilson joins the School from the University of Sheffield Medical School where he led a EULAR Centre of Excellence for Rheumatology.

Hundreds Compete for Jevon Newman Memorial Trophy at 4th annual UCD Rás
Hundreds of UCD students, staff and locals competed in the 4th annual Rás UCD 5k Road Race around Belfield Campus on Saturday 6th April. The winner, Emmett Jennings was awarded the Jevon Newman memorial trophy, which commemorates a UCD medical student and athletics club member, who died last year.
