The UCD Clinical Research Centre is now accepting applications for both a full-time Graduate Certificate and a part-time Masters degree programme in Clinical and Translational Research Programmes. Both courses commence in September 2015. Closing date for applications is Friday 21 August 2015.
The death has been announced of Dr Patrick Keelan (UCD Medicine 1957) retired consultant respiratory physician and former head of the Department of Medicine at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and the UCD Department of Medicine. The School extends our sympathies to his wife Dorothy, sons Ted, Hugh and Paul and the entire Keelan family.
Two multi-centred international clinical trials involving St Vincent’s University Hospital have demonstrated the benefits of a cystic fibrosis trans-membrane conductance regulator (CFTR) corrector/potentiator combination in patients with cystic fibrosis who are homozygous for a common gene mutation. The study, published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine, provides an important evidence base for the treatment of this patient population given the disease incidence and prevalence of this mutation in the Irish population.
We send our best wishes those receiving rehabilitation care at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center after the tragic accident in Berkeley, California which claimed the lives of six young people including three UCD students. We remember also the late Dr Conal Wilmot, a UCD Medicine alumnus who dedicated his life to caring for those with spinal injuries and established that hospital's trauma centre.
Congratulations to Mark English who qualified for the 2016 Olympics by posting a season’s best in a very strong 800m field at the Anniversary Games in London. The Letterkenny man will be pleased to have achieved the Olympic qualifying standard but also to have put a recent injury behind him.
The U21 Health Sciences Social Media for Education in Health committee invited submissions of 3-minute YouTube videos to illustrate the use and/or impact of social media on our approach to knowledge sharing and education. The deadline for submission is Friday 21st August and the winners will be announced at the U21 Health Sciences meeting in Chile in September, 2015.
Findings of an international study published in the New England Journal of Medicine show that the drug, liraglutide 3.0 mg is beneficial to weight management in obesity when used in combination with diet and increased physical activity. Professor Carel le Roux, UCD School of Medicine based in UCD Diabetes Complications Research Centre and UCD Conway Institute is an obesity specialist and one of the co-authors on the article.
We would like to congratulate the PMC class of 2015 who graduated on the 21st of June, in the presence of academic leadership from both UCD and RCSI, as well as guests from Malaysian government departments and agencies including JPA and MARA.
In June this year Prof Sean Gaine, Consultant Respiratory Physician, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and UCD Associate Clinical Professor, travelled to the United States to receive the Samuel P. Asper Award for Achievement in Advancing International Medical Education from the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association.
