We are delighted to see new life being breathed into the historic Mater Misericordiae University Hospital facilities with several international surgical training courses taking place over the past year. The now decommissioned operating theatres and wards hosted two international training programmes under the auspices of the European Society of Coloproctology and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland.
Researchers at University College Dublin (UCD), Ulster University and Florida State University have been awarded €2.5 million to investigate the effectiveness of gastric bypass surgery under the US-Ireland Research and Development Partnership grant programme. The research will specifically aim to identify if long term weight loss from gastric bypass or bariatric surgery is due solely to changes in appetite and food choices or if it is also associated with changes in metabolic rate following surgery.
We were delighted to welcome our alumni to the 2016 UCD Medical Graduates Association Alumni Reunion which took place on Friday, 13th May 2016. Over 200 alumni from across the Medicine graduating classes of 1956, 1961, 1966, 1976, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2006 and 2015 attended the event at which the UCD Medical Graduates Association Distinguished Graduate Award was presented to Prof Michael Moriarity (UCD Class of 1966).

Applications are invited from eligible surgeons for the 2016 Professor Patrick Fitzgerald Travel Bursary. This Bursary aims to support a surgeon of registrar or specialist registrar grade working in a hospital within affiliated hospitals to visit a surgical unit outside of Ireland. The travel bursary may also be used to attend an international surgical meeting at which the recipient will present a research paper. The closing date for application for the 2016 bursary is 30th May 2016.
The annual Newman Fellowship Dinner was held on Tuesday, 26th April 2016 with UCD President Professor Andrew J. Deeks welcoming Donors, Fellows and their Academic Mentors to celebrate UCD’s pioneering postdoctoral research initiative, the Newman Fellowship Programme. The School was strongly represented with 16 of the 17 awardees mentored by members of staff or our adjunct clinical faculty.
The Universitas 21 Health Sciences Group has launched the second U21 Health Sciences Teaching Excellence Awards. These awards are designed to offer health science based junior/early career faculty an opportunity to develop international collaborations and to provide an evidence based for their career progression. Closing date for submission of expressions of interest is 1st June 2016 and application details are attached.
Congratulations to Ms Eileen O’Brien from the UCDD Maternal & Fetal Health Group, who won the oral prize for Maternal Medicine at The British Maternal & Fetal Medicine Society’s 18th Annual Conference held in Birmingham on 21st & 22nd April 2016. Ms O'Brien presented on a study entitled ‘Calcium attenuates impact of vitamin D inadequacy on bone turnover in winter pregnancy’.
