Professor Michael Keane, M.D. Head of UCD School of Medicine is very pleased to share the recent news from Directors of the Internal Medicine Residency Mayo Clinic, Minnesota USA that UCD School of Medicine 2018 graduate Dr. Jack McHugh, M.B.B.CH; BAO, recently received the 2022 J. Thomas Mangan MD. Award for Clinical Excellence in Primary Healthcare for Internal Medicine Residency Training Programme, of the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education.
The award, Est 1999 recognises, Dr. J. Thomas Mangan, an outstanding internist and educator of community Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic. Candidates are nominated and selected by their peers, faculty and allied healthcare team-members in primary care clinic. This award honours one of the 52 members of the graduating class each year based on clinical competency, professionalism, scholarly activity, and contributions to the residency programme. Dr. McHugh exemplified all attributes throughout his residency. A colleague summarised Dr McHugh’s performance in his primary care very well - ‘Goes above & beyond for his patients, superb medical knowledge, personable & empathetic bedside manner, invested in every patient, is truly an all-encompassing physician & highly deserving of this award.’
Dr McHugh was also selected by his classmates to receive the ‘Attitude, Commitment & Excellence’ award during his training – further demonstrating the respect that he has earned from his peers.
Additionally, he has demonstrated excellence in research and has 13 peer reviewed publications, 3 as first author along with multiple oral and poster presentations at the time of this announcement.
The Mayo Clinic has stated that they are exceptionally pleased that Dr McHugh has been selected to be a Chief Medical Resident in the Mayo Clinic Internal Medicine Training Programme. Dr. McHugh accepted the position and started the programme in July 2022.
