2016 Clinical Commencement White Coat Ceremony
Now firmly established as a significant milestone within our Medicine degree programmes, the 2016 Clinical Commencement 'White Coat' Ceremony took place at UCD O’Reilly Hall on the evening of Wednesday, 10th February 2016.
Marking the commencement of the full-time clinical training stage of their degree programme, 125 undergraduate entry and 105 graduate entry medicine students were presented with white coats by members of the faculty. We were delighted to accommodate several faculty members in presenting their sons and daughters with their symbolic white coat.
The School has formalised this ceremony in part to emphasize with change in expectations of our students as they become immersed in clinical training at our affiliated hospital and general practice sites. Our students are acutely aware of society’s expectations of not only medical professionals but also of young doctors in training.
The key note address was given by Professor Brendan Drumm, UCD Professor of Paediatrics and former Director General, Health Service Executive who encouraged our students to hold true to the ideals and aspirations which has originally attracted them into Medicine. Noting that the ‘good old days of medicine’ were much exaggerated, he observed that this generation of doctors would define the health system of tomorrow. He encouraged our students to maintain their enthusiasm, empathy and determination to become collegial healthcare professionals whose first priority would be their patients.
The ceremony was officiated by Dean of Medicine and Head of School, Professor Patrick Murray, assisted by a selection of academic staff. We were delighted to share the evening with our students’ guests which included partners, parents and siblings. Indeed we were thrilled that so many families of our international students made the trip to Dublin to witness the event. A further 300 families and friends watched the proceedings in Canada, Malaysia and the US via our live webstream.
In addition to receiving their white coat, students were presented with a copy of the School’s ‘Learning in the Clinic’, a student guide on expected behaviours and how to maximise the educational experience, written by Dr Suzanne Donnelly, Director of Clinical Education.
