How To Apply

Scenario 1 (Undergraduate / Postgrad & Intern): Where the PI has no ethical approval for the research project which may, or may not, also involve collection of personal data.

  1. If there is no ethical issue with the research and there is no personal data being collected / reviewed, the PI & student will apply for Exemption from Full Ethical Review (Undergraduate) OR Exemption from Full Ethical Review (Postgraduate / Academic Intern),  OR
  2. If ethical issue(s) are identified and / or personal data will be collected / reviewed, then PI & student will apply for Full Ethical Review (Undergraduate) OR Full Ethical Review (Postgraduate / Academic Intern)

 

Scenario 2 (Undergraduate / Postgrad & Intern): PI has ethical approval already in place prior to selecting student to join the research project.

  1. Student joins research project and, with PI, applies for Exemption from Full Ethical Review (Undergraduate) OR Exemption from Full Ethical Review (Postgraduate / Academic Intern)
  2. Template letter sent to PI, for the PI to forward to her/his original REC.  This informs the original REC that student has joined the research project. *

       (*Before sending template letter back to the PI, the Office will check that original ethical approval for the research does not involve the student participating in research that may be prohibited under Irish and/or EU law.  Office will forward research proposal to the Medicine REC for an opinion if unsure). 

 

Scenario 3 (Undergraduate / Postgrad & Intern): Student wants to do a research project that has no ethical issue and will not collect any personal data from study participants.

  1. PI / Module Co-Ordinator & student apply for Exemption from Full Ethical Review (Undergraduate) OR Exemption from Full Ethical Review (Postgraduate / Academic Intern).
