Delegates at ADHD Conference

At UCD Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, a variety of courses are taught from undergraduate modules for medical students to post-graduate courses for professionals from various background as well as training for psychiatrists including those specialising in child psychiatry.

We also hold seminars, workshops, study days and information events for parents, teachers and others interested in child and adolescent mental health.

College of Psychiatry of Ireland HST/BST teaching

The group contribute actively to the teaching of trainee psychiatrists and those specialising in child psychiatry. Courses delivered cover a full array of topics integral to psychiatry training including teaching about specific childhood and teenage mental health difficulties, treatments and therapeutic approaches as well as providing training on skills such as management and medico-legal essential to the consultant role.

MSc in Child Art Psychotherapy

Research demonstrates that children and adolescents who find it difficult to communicate their emotional conflicts verbally are enabled to do so through the use of pictorial language. This two year, part-time taught masters programme, delivered at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, is for professionals who wish to specialise in using images in a psychotherapeutic context to understand the inner world of the child. Graduate Research Supervision

Our academic and research staff supervise Masters and PhDs in the area of child and adolescent mental health. Current focus in ADHD and ED but wider applications are welcome from Irish and international prospective student.

Study Days for Primary and Post-Primary Teachers

Of 141 attendees at a recent workshop for teachers in Waterford (Introduction to Mental Health in the Classroom), conducted by Prof McNicholas and Dr Gavin, 99% rated the presentations as excellent, 93% considered the content excellent, 84% considered the recommended strategies to be excellent and 94% rated the relevance of the workshop as excellent.

Parent Information Seminars

We host regular parent information evenings, facilitating the psycho-educational component of positive mental health promotion. Mental health experts speak on a range of mental health issues, and parents have the opportunity to ask the professionals questions.
