Biomedical Health & Life Sciences, Stage 4

Why did you choose to study BHLS?

I chose to study Biomedical Science because I’ve always had an interest in human health and disease. This degree offered an opportunity to learn more about various disease pathologies, and more importantly how to prevent and alleviate diseases through research.

What made you choose UCD?

Apart from having a good reputation as a university and offering a range of extra-curricular activities, it was the only university that I knew of that offered such a diverse Biomedical degree.

What has been the most interesting aspect of the course so far?

All of the course has been interesting, as we study both medical and science subjects. However, the research project undertaken in our final year really does stand out. We use the knowledge gained over the previous years of study to address our chosen disease area, and we really get an idea for the “translational” research approach from our placements in leading clinical research groups.

What has been the most challenging part of the course so far?

I know that many of my class mates would also agree that the research project was the most challenging part so far, with experiments often not working out or having to be repeated many times! At the same time it really gave me an idea of what a career in research would be like.

What advice would you give to prospective students who are thinking of taking the course?

This course is definitely for anyone who is interested in science related subjects It’s a very interesting course and every module that you study is beneficial to you when you go to do your research.

What do you hope to do, or in which area would you like to specialise after graduation?

I’d like to now go on to study medicine but research and the possibility of doing a PhD isn’t completely out of the picture!
