IS20020 Information Modelling

Academic Year 2021/2022

This module examines the ways we structure information in information systems, both on the Internet and in other networks, for a wide range of applications and users. Students will learn how a variety of organisation and retrieval systems work, learn theoretical and practical foundations for organising and retrieving text and other formats, and evaluate the state of the art in information organisation and retrieval.

Students will also learn how to design and create a relational database and retrieve information with SQL.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Identify established tools and models for organising information.
2. Demonstrate understanding of tools and methods for information retrieval.
3. Understand and describe the changing nature of information resources and the process by which such resources are/will be published, organised, represented and retrieved.
4. Design an organisation system for a small collection based on their understanding of class themes.
5. Create a relational database with SQL with queries to mine the database for information
