Academic Year 2023/2024

This module is designed for international students who have a B1 level of English and wish to improve their English for personal and professional development in an academic environment. Students will improve their understanding of native speaker usage in an academic setting. The aim of this class is to help students read academic texts more effectively and critically and listen to lectures in order to summarize points of view. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate their performance on short presentations on academic topics and will develop the ability to analyse research findings in a formal academic style. Aspects of Irish academic culture will be introduced through written and spoken texts and classroom discussions. This module will be delivered via small group teaching with classes having a maximum of 18 students. Students will also have access to extra resources and materials via the Virtual Learning Environment, Brightspace.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who achieve at least a B grade in this module should be able to:

• give a short presentation on an academic topic (spoken production)
• discuss an academic topic in a reasonably fluent manner (spoken interaction)
• understand the main points in a range of complex texts (listening)
• recognise significant points in complex texts on concrete and abstract topics (reading)
• write clear detailed texts in an academic style (writing)

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module involves an interactive small group class using pair work and task-based activities. Students prepare short academic presentations in their area of study and work on critical writing.
