UCD Students show their true colours through Colour on a Grey Canvas book
|
Today, Wednesday 1st December, sporting hero, Brian ODriscoll joined forces with Superquinn owner and UCD graduate, Feargal Quinn to help launch Colour on a Grey Canvas an evocative photographic book that draws on the experiences of students in the UCD Overseas Volunteers who spent last summer working in Delhi, India.

Colour on a Grey Canvas is a beautiful production focusing on the hope inspired by the students work. It will be sold for 10 and available from most Superquinn stores and from the student shop, UCD, as well as from
www.ucdvo.org and all proceeds will be used to help finance further student work in India and Haiti. The publication of the book was funded completely by the UCD150 office.
Students raised an initial 40,000 to fund the trip last July. Thirty UCD students, from a variety of subjects ranging from meta-physics to physiotherapy, together with three leaders, carried out volunteer work in Delhi, India for the month. The book Colour on a Grey Canvas is a record of their time in India, and the photographs are a testament to their efforts to reach out to those in poverty stricken Delhi thousands of kilometres away.
While in Delhi the group worked on seven different projects which varied greatly from literacy programmes for underprivileged children, working with mentally and physically handicapped orphans to building a two-classroom school in a slum in West Delhi.
The photographic images in the book are taken at all seven of the projects and show the students working closely with the local people, not only providing invaluable help and teaching important skills, but also forging strong life long relationships. The book contains many images depicting the work of the students in the world of the poor and displaced in India. The pictures are accompanied by the memories shared by the students and the thoughts evoked by their experiences.
Speaking about the book Dr Hugh R Brady, President UCD said, The book is a tribute to the people of Delhi and a credit to the students of UCD and I am proud to see the commitment of the students and the optimism they created shine through in the photographs.
This year, as part of the UCD 150th celebrations, the programme will spread its wings as plans unfold to visit Haiti next summer and create a month long summer camp for over 100 children with Aids, fulfilling UCD Founder, John Henry Newmans, vision of UCD as the Alma Mater of a rising generation.
