UCD
Video Streaming Service
Using
streamed media enhances online academic content by providing a video
or audio source.
It provides a powerful tool to the academic community, allowing one to
adapt, create, and augment academic curricula content over the World Wide
Web.
Traditional lectures can be broadcast live over the internet to a disperse
student population, or the lecture can be archived as a resource to be
accessed asynchronously for review and reflection.
The arena of digital technology has now arrived at the door of the academic
powerful desk-top computers, low cost digital video cameras and
easy-to-use video editing software have come hand in hand with the
increase in bandwidth (i.e. high speed modems and cable) access to the Web.
The concept behind streaming media is the ability to deliver and play
back video and/or audio whilst it is being downloaded. Originally playback
would occur only once the entire file had been downloaded to your computer.
Now with sophisticated multimedia tools it is possible to watch and listen
to events as they happen and subsequently no downloads which means no extra
files clogging up your computer.
RealNetworks' RealPlayer was the first Audio/Video Streaming Tool introduced
and is still one of the best solutions available. The AVC has invested in a
dedicated streaming server, which is supported by Computing
Services and brings video streaming to UCD.
