Avian Influenza Travel Information
To date (February 17th 2006) the presence of avian flu virus H5N1 has
been detected in bird populations in Austria, Germany, Italy, Greece,
Bulgaria, Turkey, Belgium, Cyprus, Romania, Nigeria and parts of Asia.
Currently there are no specific restrictions for travellers to any of
the countries affected by avian influenza as the risk is deemed to be
low.
Persons travelling to the above areas or to any other areas where the presence of the virus is suspected or has been confirmed are requested to take the following precautions:
Avoid visiting live animal markets, poultry farms and other
places where one might come into contact with wild, domestic or caged
birds
- Avoid contact with surfaces contaminated with animal faeces or fluids
- Do not eat or handle uncooked or raw poultry, egg or duck dishes
- Wash your hands regularly
- Do not attempt to bring any live poultry products back to
Ireland
University staff planning to travel to areas where outbreaks have been
reported should seek medical advice before departure and check the
present advice from the Department of Health & Children on (01) 635
4000, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre on (01) 876 5300, and
www.hpsc.ie, or the Department of Agriculture on (01) 607 2512 and
www.agriculture.gov.ie. Travel advice may be obtained from
