“Entrepreneurs Live!” seminar series featuring leading Irish entrepreneurs

“Entrepreneurs Live!” the seventh Enterprise Seminar Series organised by NovaUCD in association with the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board, will run from 10 Oct to 5 Dec 2006. The series was launched by Jerry Kennelly who recently sold his companies Stockbyte and Stockdisc for $135 million to Getty Images. “Entrepreneurs Live!” aims to promote a spirit of entrepreneurship among the academic, research and student population at UCD.

The “Entrepreneurs Live!” seminar series features leading Irish entrepreneurs talking about their experiences of setting-up and running their businesses emphasising the highs and lows encountered along their entrepreneurial journey and highlighting the lessons they have learnt along the way. After each seminar, attendees will have the opportunity to ask probing questions of the guest entrepreneur.

The seminar series takes place each Tuesday lunchtime from 12:30 pm to 1:50 pm until December 5 in the William Jefferson Clinton Auditorium, UCD, Belfield, Dublin 4. Attendance is open to all especially undergraduate and postgraduate students.

  • Michael Johnson, CEO, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board (21 Novermber), will discuss how the County Enterprise Board supports the development of start-up companies and enterprises.

  • Richard Bryce, Mapflow (5 December)

Jerry Kennelly won the 2005 Ernst & Young Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year Award and four of the entrepreneurs taking part in the “Entrepreneurs Live!” series were short listed for the 2006 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award (Dylan Collins, Aldagh McDonogh, Colum O’Sullivan and Barry Smyth).

Speaking at the commencement of the seventh series, Dr Pat Frain, Director, NovaUCD said, “The “Entrepreneurs Live!” seminars have continued to attract a large and diverse audience and to stimulate lively and enthusiastic debate on issues relating to entrepreneurship and innovation and the establishment and development of technology-based companies.” He added, “The level of interest in these seminars is evidence of a growing culture of entrepreneurship on the UCD campus which augurs well for Ireland’s ability to generate new knowledge-intensive and innovative enterprises which are critical for the sustained development of Ireland’s knowledge-based economy.”

According to Michael Johnson, CEO, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board, “This seminar series will enable the attendees gain an insight into the commercial and personal challenges that entrepreneurs face in developing their enterprises.” He added, “The guest entrepreneurs draw from their own experience and offer invaluable lessons on how to raise funding, hire the right people and sell a proposition to the marketplace.”

Previous guest entrepreneur speakers have included Feargal Brady, Blueface; Michael Carey, Jacob Fruitfield; Peter Conlon, Xsil; Eamonn Fallon, Daft.ie; Dr Chris Horn, Iona Technologies; Angela Kennedy, Megazyme Ireland International; Ray Nolan, Web Reservations International and Brody Sweeney, O’Briens Sandwich Bar.
