Death of Dr. Tony O'Neill, Director of Sport at
UCD.
Dr. Tony O' Neill, Director of Sport at UCD died in the early
hours of Sunday morning, 3 October 1999 after a short illness.
The passing of Dr. O'Neill is a deep and sad loss to the UCD where his
enthusiasm and considerable ability as a motivator and organiser made him the key figure
in the development of sport within the College over the past decades.
Theo Dunne, UCD coach and a close personal friend for 30 years puts Dr.
O' Neill's contribution in some perspective.
" Everyone in the College regarded him as a friend. He as an
extraordinarily charitable man, a lot of his work was unseen and unheralded. He was witty
and great company. I'll miss him dearly."
Dr. O' Neill previously practised sports medicine in Dublin but
even at this early stage of his career he was committed to the development of soccer at
UCD. He brought the Club into Senior Competition and had the satisfaction of seeing
UCD win the FAI Cup in 1984 for the first time after a replayed final.
Dr. O'Neill also had a strong influence on the development of the FAI
where he rose to the high profile position of General Secretary. He went on to leave his
mark on the European Scene with UEFA, where he became a member of the Euro 2000 organising
committee.
He will be sadly missed.
