Data Analytics with Visualisation Course Modules

This interactive, hands-on certificate course will introduce you to the foundational techniques and concepts needed to work with large datasets in Python programming language, with a focus on visualising data and generating valuable insights. The course covers the CRISP-DM phases of data understanding and data preparation, which are essential steps in the data analysis process. Using DataCamp’s world-class learning platform, you will learn to use some popular Python libraries, which are widely used in the industry and can help you work with data more efficiently and effectively. You will become a confident and proficient user of Python in a data manipulation and visualisation context, with universal skills that can be immediately applied across any department within your organisation.

1. Introduction to Data Analytics

Learn about the CRoss Industry Standard Process for Data Mining, or CRISP-DM – a process model that is the basis of data science. Look at data scientist roles and the environments used in industry.

  • Python libraries
  • Business problems and data requirements
  • Data collection and data understanding
  • Introduction to IDEs

2. Data Importing & Cleaning

Learn about extracting and cleaning existing data from databases, the internet, and other sources. Find out what to do when there is missing or inconsistent data.

  • CSV file import
  • Relational databases (SQL)
  • Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
  • Web scraping

3. DataFrames & Data Manipulation

Understand how to quickly manipulate and transform large data tables using Python libraries such as pandas.

  • Creating DataFrames
  • Data cleaning
  • Aggregation
  • Grouping, filtering, and sorting

4. Joining Data & Data Preparation

Learn how to combine multiple sources of data in meaningful ways. Explore feature engineering and data preparation techniques.

  • Joining
  • Merging
  • Concatenation
  • Relationships between tables

5. Data Visualisation With Python

Discover why data visualisation is so important, and how Python libraries can help with creating visual representations of your data.

  • Data types in datasets
  • Variables to control in charts
  • Plot types
  • Visualisation libraries: matplotlib and seaborn

6. Statistical Data Exploration

Explore statistical analysis and summary statistics techniques, looking at how to identify patterns and trends in data.

  • Descriptive statistics
  • Exploratory data analysis
  • Univariate and bivariate analysis

7. Introduction To Modelling: Machine Learning Basics

Gain an understanding of machine learning concepts such as linear regression and classification. Explore different types of machine learning algorithms (supervised, unsupervised, and reinforced learning).

  • Modelling
  • Regression vs classification
  • Training and testing data
  • Evaluation metrics

8. Preparing The Final Project

As part of conducting your own data project, you will apply the CRISP-DM methodology to a real-world dataset, implementing data analytics techniques learned throughout the course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this course right for me?

This course would suit any professional who needs to manipulate and visualise large amounts of data as part of their role – regardless of industry, sector, or department. It is also ideal for someone carving out a career in data science or data analysis. It is important to note that Python programming language is not taught during the course, so you should have previously taken a course such as our Professional Academy Certificate in Python Programming, or similar, or have solid practical experience using Python. There is a large self-guided portion to this course – you will be expected to attend eight hours of live online lectures and complete 32 hours of online learning on the DataCamp platform (see below), plus time for exercises and assignments.

How will this course help with my career?

It’s predicted that there will be 181 zettabytes of data created worldwide by 2025. For many organisations, extracting data insights that can support and improve decision making is a big challenge. Demand for all types of analytics specialists continues to increase as more companies recognise the value of data for business growth. The skills learned on this course will benefit professionals across many different fields, including human resources, finance, sales, manufacturing, healthcare, marketing, and education. Data analysis itself is a career path that offers excellent progression and salary expectations.

What is the online learning experience like?

Outside of the online tutorial sessions, you will need to complete some self-study work using the DataCamp platform. This platform, where you will transform your data skills, is trusted by over six million learners globally. All your learning happens in-browser, so there’s no need to install heavy or costly software programmes.

Your learning is supported by weekly live expert mentor sessions, delivered using Zoom. During these classes, your teachers will use technology interactively to ensure an engaging learning experience. When appropriate, students will be encouraged to activate their microphones so that they can ask questions and communicate with other students.

What is the student experience like?

Student care is a high priority at UCD Professional Academy, which is why our Student Services team is on hand to support you throughout your time with us. How is this course assessed?

Your progress through the course will be marked by milestones that are reviewed and evaluated by the instructor, who will provide you with feedback. Your formal, summative assessment is through a final project showcasing your newly acquired skills in importing, cleaning, analysing, and visualising a dataset. You can use any dataset that is relevant to your work or a personal interest, as long as it does not contain personal information. Evaluation is based on the quality of data manipulation and visualisation, as well as your ability to apply the concepts covered in the course to real-world scenarios.

What are the benefits of a Professional Academy Diploma?

UCD Professional Academy Diplomas and Certificates are designed to give your career an advantage. Developed in conjunction with industry thought leaders our courses teach practical, applied skills to support you to achieve your career and business goals. Professional Academy Diplomas are suitable for career minded learners wishing to advance their professional skills and prospects rather than their academic credentials.

The Professional Academy is an independent wholly owned part of UCD designed to address the need for skills development in the workforce. Courses tend to be short, designed and delivered by industry practitioners, and are not part of nor do they lead to a traditional University award such as a degree or a masters. They are widely accepted by employers and many students are sponsored to study by their organisation.
