Alltech Symposium,  May 2013

Prof Alex Evans presented on Re-Imagining Nutrition at Alltech 2013 Symposium "Glimpse: The future of agriculture 2020" in Kentucky.

EpiConcept Annual Conference 2013

Dr Trudee Fair, Dr Alan O'Doherty and Dr Abdullah Al Naib attended the first EpiConcept annual conference held in Antalya, Turkey on 24-25 April 2013. EpiConcept is a COST action which aims to bring together researchers of many European countries in order to create a collaboration network which focuses on the epigenome of gametes and embryos at periconception, describe the epigenetic modulators and profile during periconception, and will develop an epigenomic toolbox and inform the public, the livestock breeders and the industry on how the epigenome can be manipulated via the periconception environment. ESDAR 2012



The 16th Conference of the European Society for Domestic Animal Reproduction & EU AI-Vets Conference was hosted by RBRC and UCD School of Veterinanry Medicine and School of Agriculture and Food Science in UCD from 29th August - 1st September 2012. The three day event was attended by over 350 delegates and focused on the research, educational or clinical aspects of animal reproduction. 

ESDAR is a non profitable community with special emphasis on reproduction in domestic animals and wild animals as well. The society supports all activites to stimulate education and research in the field of reproduction, especially for clinical Aspects, biotechnology and Physiology of Reproduction. Pictured at the UCD Agriculture, Food Science and Human Nutrition Careers Day were Prof Alex Evans, (UCD Dean of Agriculture) Maeve Dineen, UCD Agricultural Science Alumnus and Business Editor, Irish Independent with Dr. Karina Pierce (President, Agricultural Science Association) and Mr. Padraig Kelly (final year UCD Agricultural Science student and Chair of the Agricultural Science Careers.

On 14th April 2012, 30 exhibitors attended UCD Agriculture, Food Science and Human Nutrition Careers Day with companies such as Kerry Group, Glanbia, Monaghan Mushrooms, Dawn Meats and Norbrook in attendance.  Careers Day was the culmination of a range of activities including: development of a graduate handbook; dedicated CV and Interview workshops; ASA Mock Interviews; Employer presentations; and a large Careers Exposition. UCD Dean of Agriculture, Professor Alex Evans welcomed each of the 30 exhibitors in attendance, thanked them for their commitment in recruiting agricultural science graduates and congratulated them on their entrepreneurship and optimism at this difficult economic time.Business Editor of the Irish Independent and UCD Agricultural Science Alumnus Ms Maeve Dineen provided the keynote address to over 300 students enrolled to undergraduate programmes in the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science.

Dr Marijke Beltman discusses the new problematic pathogens which have become endemic in the national herd: Bovine Viral Diarrhoea virus (DVB), leptospirosis and Neospora caninum in her recent article in the Irish Independent.

The annual meeting of the European Society of Domestic Animal Reproduction (ESDAR) will take place in UCD in 2012.

Students visit Lyon's Research Farm

"Building an integrative research framework  Workshop"

Prof Alex Evans and Prof Maurice Boland were involved with speaking at sessions in the Workshop “Building an integrative research framework to deliver profit, through breeding, to the Agri-Food Industry” held in Portlaoise on 28th April 2009.

Two Students win Gold Medals in Undergraduate Awards, Ireland

Lynne O’Shea from University College Dublin in Pharmacy for essay “Analysis of the p53 tumour suppressor protein activation in Xenopus” & Claire Fitzsimons from University College Dublin in Agriculture for essay “Nutritional factors affecting the fertility of dairy cows embryos” win Gold Medals at the Undergraduate Awards of Ireland. The winners were chosen by an academic review process by 33 separate panels made up of leading figures from across Irish academia, the public, private and citizen sector.

Two of students won Glod Medals out of  1,600 submissions were received made up of papers, essays and dissertations produced as part of normal course work during each academic year.  In addition to receiving a gold medal for their submissions each students winning essays will be published in an annual journal.

Dr Michael Diskin appears as judge on Feirm Factor

Dr Michael Diskin appeared as a Guest Judge on Irish Reality TV Series "Feirm Factor".  Michael was one of a series of judges who made appearances throughout the series, offering their own expertise and experience to the contestants.
