Suzanne Harkins has a BA in History and Psychology from The George Washington University (GWU) and a PhD in Sociology from Trinity College Dublin (TCD). She also completed a Diploma in Statistics (Distinction) while at TCD. Her studies were supported by scholarships including a Presidential Academic Scholarship (GWU), a Trinity College Postgraduate Award (TCD) and a National Children's Strategy Research Scholarship from the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs (Ireland).
Suzanne Harkins¿s doctoral work focused on the sociological investigation of food, 'healthy eating' and body weight practices of Irish families with young children, with an emphasis on lay understandings of obesity.
During the year 2011-2012, she is based in UCD as an Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) Postdoctoral Scholar. The recipient of an IRCHSS 'New Ideas' grant, she was a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships (CRFR) at the University of Edinburgh in March 2012.

Suzanne's main research interests include the sociologies of food, obesity and the family. She also has a specific interest in mixed method research design and methodological issues related to research with young children.
