SUPPORT FOR RESEARCH DISRUPTED BY COVID-19

The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, through the Higher Education Authority (HEA), has provided funding to higher education institutions to assist in the provision of costed extensions to research activities that are at risk because of delays incurred as a result of Covid-19.

UCD received over €11.3M in funding which was allocated to Students and Staff via 6 rounds of funding calls.

All funds have now been allocated and there are no further calls planned. A full breakdown is below.

Q. I have been approved under the scheme and require a no cost extension to my original project?

A. PI's and researchers should follow the usual process when requesting a no cost extension to the original project from their funder, please note any contact extensions or stipends granted under the scheme are NOT funded through the original project but paid for through a central fund. UCD research will complete the relevant OHF and stipend requests on behalf of the applicant.

Q. I am a researcher and have been approved a contract extension under the call, what happens next?

A. Contract extensions will be processed by UCD Research after the decision has been updated on Infohub. These contract extension will be funded from a central account and will be processed via the raising on the relevant Online Hiring Form. If you have been approved for a contract extension UCD Research will raise this request.  You should contact HR Contracts team if you require an update on the status of your contract. This may take a number of months to complete, and priority will be given to those finishing soonest.

Q. I am a research student and have been approved a stipend under the call, what happens next?

A. If you also require a thesis extension you will need to have this in place before your stipend can be paid, see details below on how to apply for a thesis extension Stipends will be processed by UCD Research after the decision has been updated on Infohub. These stipend payments will be funded from a central account. You will receive an email from Research Finance Office once a stipend has been approved which you must act on in order to complete the stipend registration process.

Q. I am a research student and have been approved a stipend in the final round but will need a thesis extension in the future how do I request a thesis extension?

A. Thesis extensions will be reviewed by the Graduate Studies Board and further information on how and when to apply for this can be found on the Graduate Studies website

Previous Round Details:

Round 1 - CLOSED on 6th November 2020- accepted applications from:

  • Researchers with contract end dates between 30/11/20 and 31/1/21
  • Research students who have received an extension of their thesis submission date from September 2020 to January 2021.

This round is now Closed and all results, contract extensions and stipends have been advised and processed

Round 2 - CLOSED on 25th November 2020 - accepted applications from:

  • Researchers with contract end dates between 01/02/21 and 31/3/21.
  • Research students due to submit in January 2021 who are now seeking an extension of their thesis submission date to May 2021, with stipend.
  • Research students planning to submit by May 2021 who do not require an extension of their thesis submission date but are seeking a stipend and Closed All results and contract extensions and stipends have been advised and processed

Round 3 - CLOSED on 19th February 2021 - accepted applications from:

  • Researchers with contract end dates between 01/04/21 and 31/08/21.
  • Full time research students due to submit by 7 May 2021 who are now seeking an extension of their thesis submission date to 3 September 2021, with / without stipend.
  • Full time research students originally planning to submit between 8 May 2021 and 3 September 2021 who are now planning to submit on 3 September 2021 and are seeking a stipend for the period of delay.

This round is now Closed and all results, contract extensions and stipends have been advised and processed

Round 4 - CLOSED on 25th June 2021- accepted applications from:

  • Researchers with contract end dates between 01/09/21 and 31/12/21.
  • Full time research students due to submit by 3 September 2021 who are now seeking an extension of their thesis submission date to 7 January 2022, with / without stipend.
  • Full time research students originally planning to submit between 3 September 2021 and 7 January 2022 who are now planning to submit in January 2022 and are seeking a stipend for the period of delay

Round 5 - CLOSED on 27th August 2021- accepted applications from:

  • Researchers with contract ending from 1st January 2022
  • Full time research students due to submit after 7 January 2022, and are requesting approval for stipend support only.
