Networks of Excellence Scheme

This scheme is currently not open for applications.

A crucial initial barrier to interdisciplinary and translational research is a lack of formal mechanisms that enable integration and co-ordination between disciplines and from bench-to-bedside. A centralised approach to nurturing collaboration will allow new research activity within Personalised & Translational Medicine, as well as enabling establishment for the basis of a One Health Research Centre. In addition, to effect behavioural change and enable impact, there is a necessity to link with policymakers, patient groups and other stakeholders, activities that are not currently taking place on a significant scale.

Target Audience: Basic biomedical and clinician scientists, and researchers in medical humanities, that would benefit from the development of new collaborations and, in particular, with external stakeholders that will enable translation.

1. Project Management Grants

Where critical mass is identified, awards for project managers will be made available to enable strategic planning and greater integration, the outputs of which will form the basis for a major grant application. This will include hosting of regular exchange meetings to spark ideas for integrated research and foster new collaborations across biomedical and clinical domains, as well as the medical humanities.

2. PPI Awards

A formalised approach to Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) is a relatively new concept and requires cultural change in the research community. The University to date does not have a mechanism to support education and awareness in PPI; therefore, awards will be made available to develop PPI activities across UCD.

3. Travel Grants

To effectively seed new collaborations and nurture pre-existing ones with international colleagues and other research teams, short-term travel grants and visiting fellowships will be made available to visit collaborators, in particular from other Wellcome TrustĀfunded institutions.
