Health and Safety Information for New UCD Staff

Safety Induction Training

This short training course is aimed at all staff and Postgraduate Students in UCD and is designed to give introductory information on health and safety, including an overview of what the University’s safety policies and procedures are. 

This training is not intended to be a substitute for local safety training or safety specific advice or guidelines which are applicable to your role here in UCD, for example working with laboratory equipment, etc., and are given to you by your line manager.

  • Details on the Campus services 24 hour emergency line - 7999/ 01-7167999
  • Personal Emergency Egress Plan (PEEP)
  • Where your emergency assembly point is located.

Information on who to report accidents and incidents to can be found on the Accident Reporting page including where to obtain an incident report form.

Details about UCD's safety training courses can be found on the Training Courses page including information on the following:

  • How to use a fire extinguisher
  • How to do CPR and use an AED.

The SIRC Office provides the UCD Parent Safety Statement and to accompany this overarching safety document for the University, the SIRC office has also provided Safety Statements on a (opens in a new window)College(opens in a new window) and (opens in a new window)High-Level Administrative Function basis. All these documents are available on the SIRC Office website.

You may check locally within your School or Unit to see which Safety Statement covers the operations of your School or Unit and which risk assessments are applicable to your work. 

The Safety Statement for your School or Unit should contain the following information:

  • Details of your School / Unit's first aid responders & fire marshals
  • Where your emergency assembly point/s are located
  • Where can you get first aid treatment on site
  • Location of emergency equipment including first aid boxes
  • What do you do if the fire alarm sounds
  • What do you do if you come across a fire
  • Your School / Units register of risks.

Information and guidelines for setting up your new workstation can be found on Workstation Assessments and Eye Tests. Here you will find details on the following:

  • Requesting a workstation assessment,
  • Availing of a free eye and eyesight test for work with VDUs (Visual Display Units).

In addition to the safety information provided by the University SIRC Office, UCD People and Organisation Development has developed induction and orientation programmes which contain key information to help new staff & faculty become familiar with the University and their new role.
