Central European University (CEU) has awarded the twelfth annual European Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Social Sciences and Humanities to Ernesto Vasquez del Aguila, Assistant Professor in Social Justice and Director of Teaching and Learning in the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, at University College Dublin in Ireland. Vasquez del Aguila is a recognized expert in making education more inclusive, fostering community, and enabling students to contribute their knowledge and experiences in the collective learning process.

Congratulations to Dr Shane Bergin, UCD School of Education who was the recipient of the 2023 Leonardo da Vinci International Award given by European Rotary Clubs for his interdisciplinary scholarship - most notably engaging the public with, and in, science.

Through his work, Shane has lifted public discourse on science exploring issues of trust, creativity and interdisciplinarity.

This CoSSL Research Showcase highlighted ongoing research on the University Strategic Theme of ‘Transforming through Digital Technology’.

Research across the College demonstrates that digital technologies, as they themselves transform rapidly, are powerful tools for transforming society.

In the 2023 edition of the world’s most-consulted university rankings, UCD continues to be named among the best universities globally across 42 out of 54 subjects, and it remains Ireland’s strongest institution in the league table.

Five subjects within the College of Social Sciences and Law were ranked in the top 100 which includes Library & Information Management attaining its highest performing subject at 23rd in the world rankings.

Dr Steve Davis receives 2023 NovaUCD Consultancy of the Year Award

Dr Stephen Davis, an Assistant Professor in the UCD School of Archaeology whose research interests include environmental archaeology and archaeological prospection, has been named recipient of the 2023 NovaUCD Consultancy of the Year Award.

Dr Davis works in the field of remote sensing, in particular using ALS (Airborne Laser Scanning), also known as LiDAR, geophysical surveys, and multispectral satellite data in archaeological prospection. In recent years Dr Davis has carried out 12 consultancy projects, through ConsultUCD, for several County Councils across Ireland, including Cork, Clare, Kildare, Limerick, Meath, Sligo, Tipperary and Westmeath.

The College of Social Sciences and Law Research Committee, in association with the Geary Institute and UCD Research organised an Inspiring Research Leaders Lunch Time Series for academic staff. Commenting on the sessions, College Vice Principal for Research, Innovation and Impact Professor Dympna Devine “these sessions bring together colleagues across our College who have been successful in securing grants across diverse funding programmes and provide researchers with an opportunity to learn about these projects and the key insights and experiences colleagues have in relation to these funding schemes and relevant processes”.

Co-created project funded by the Irish Research Council, in partnership with Irish Aid, to support food security and climate resilience in rapidly growing cities.

The Irish Ambassador in Maputo, Mozambique launched an Irish Research Council funded project, in partnership with Irish Aid, under the Collaborative Alliances for Societal Challenges programme on 18th January 2023.

Today, UCD Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Impact Professor Orla Feely announced the winner and runners-up of the 2022 UCD Research Impact Case Study Competition.

The annual competition encourages researchers of all disciplines to write a case study that tells the story of how their work has made a positive difference.

This year’s winner, ‘Helping parents support youth mental health’ was led by Professor Eilis Hennessy, with Aine French and Dr Daráine Murphy, from UCD School of Psychology.
