The College strives to positively impact individuals and communities by enhancing understanding of the human condition through rigorous research. Areas of particular research expertise in the College include leadership, regulation and governance, identity, conflict and inclusion; innovative, ethical public policy; enhancing the public sphere; human development; child and youth wellbeing; and smart cities. Research output by academics in these areas has already positively impacted the public policy agenda at national and EU level. Through linkages with non-governmental organisations, and partnerships with a wide range of universities internationally, including in developing countries, our education and research impacts on a worldwide scale. Graduates of the college hold eminent positions in a wide range of professions throughout the world in areas including business, law, education, government, non-governmental organisations, and the media.

The College is highly research active and many academics in the College are attached to UCD Geary Institute for Public Policy, one of Europe’s leading social science institutes. Our College is also home to several acclaimed international research centres including UCD Institute for British-Irish Studies and UCD Dublin European Institute. Many schools in the College have earned a strong national and international reputation. UCD is ranked in the Top 100 in the world for Law, Geography, Politics and International Relations and Development Studies according to QS World University Rankings; UCD School of Philosophy is recognised as a Top 10 school in the English-speaking world for graduate studies in Twentieth Century Continental Philosophy by The Philosophical Gourmet; UCD School of Economics is the top-ranked school in Ireland according to RePEc rankings; and UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice is a national leader in research-led education in social work and social policy.
