It is with deep sadness that the UCD School of Politics and International Relations marks the death of Professor Elizabeth Meehan, who passed away on Saturday January 6th in her home in Edinburgh. Elizabeth had a long and illustrious career, spending a lot of it at Queen’s University Belfast where she held a chair in Politics. She was the first woman to serve as chair of the Political Studies Association of the UK, which subsequently awarded her a ‘lifetime achievement’ award in 2005, and was an elected member of the Royal Society of the Arts, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Social Sciences, and the Royal Irish Academy.
Over recent years Elizabeth had a long engagement with SPIRe as a visiting professor, focused in particular on the work of the UCD Institute for British-Irish Studies. She made a number of important research contributions, including generously co-editing two books resulting from IBIS conferences.
Elizabeth was a wonderfully supportive senior colleague, who was a pleasure to work with and know, and she will be sorely missed.
We offer our heartfelt condolences to Elizabeth’s family and her many friends.
