UCD's Chloe Ryan win's Irish Intervarsity title

22 Oct 2016

??John Hickey carded a final round 66 to claim a one-shot win as Chloe Ryan won the women’s title at the Irish Intervarsity Championships in Lahinch.

Cork's John Hickey emerged from the pack with a final round 66 to take the men's title at the Irish Intervarsity Championships as Chloe Ryan secured the women's crown with four shots to spare.

Hickey was in danger of missing the cut after opening with 73 but he played his way into contention and followed 68 with 66 to reach nine under for the tournament. Overnight leader Jack McDonnell birdied the last but his closing 72 left him stuck at eight under and one shy of the winner.

"This is massive,” said Hickey, a third year student at Cork IT. “I haven’t really contended for anything for a long time. It’s comfortably my biggest win. I finished fourth last year and I was excited to come back and try and improve on that.”

Hickey’s only previous win came at the Muskerry Scratch Cup so succeeding Alex Gleeson as the Intervarsity Champion was a significant step for the 24-year-old.

UCD’s Chloe Ryan is no stranger to success, and had won the R&A Foundation Scholars event back in April. A final round 71 left her four clear of Raychelle Santos (UU) and Mary Doyle (MU).

“I was feeling good the whole way ‘round,” said Ryan. “I had a few wobbles in the middle but I made up for it at the end.”

Beginning the day with a one-shot lead, Ryan went on the attack and made birdies at the third and the seventh to open up a four-shot cushion at the turn.

“I think I got a little bit tired because I hadn’t played a tournament in a month and a half. I was just trying to stay as relaxed as I could for the last few holes and happily it paid off,” said Ryan, who held it together after running up bogeys at 12 and 16.

American Raychelle Santos, representing the University of Ulster, finished level with Maynooth’s Mary Doyle on minus one. Santos took silver thanks to her final round 73, which bettered Doyle’s closing effort by one shot.

Maynooth pair Jack McDonnell and Kevin Le Blanc took the podium places in the men’s event, McDonnell second on minus eight while Le Blanc took third on six under after a 70.
