The Modern Pentathlon World Cup Finals were held in Vilnius, Lithuania on the 23rd and 24th of June. For the first time in history, the full quota of Irish athletes qualified for the women’s event – two of the three being having studied in UCD. The trio comprised of current student and fencing club member, Sive Brassil, recent graduate Kate Coleman and twice Olympian Natalya Coyle.
Despite her last minute qualification, Sive finished in a very impressive 19th place after a strong performance throughout the day. Kate finished 27th in the World Cup final overall and Natalya came 34th.
The mixed relay event was held the following day – with UCD student Arthur Lanigan O’Keefe competing with partner Natalya Coyle. The two began in third place after the swim but rose to first in the rankings after the fence – retaining their lead throughout the day with a strong finish in the combined laser-run event. With the Europeans and World Championships yet to come, we look forward to seeing what lies ahead of these promising athletes.
