UCD Sport is just absolutely ALIVE with activity this weekend as there are Intervarsity competitions both on and off campus, International rugby, opening night of new seasons just as others draw to very close ends and exciting cup competitions.
To start off our ladies Netball team are hosting the Intervarsities here in UCD, which is the the biggest event in the Netball calendar year. Games will commence at 11.30 in halls A and B on Friday morning. Make sure to come down and support the girls!!
The Squash club are also in Intervarsity mode this weekend as they travel south to the Mardyke Arena in Cork to hopefully claim some silverware.
We already mentioned the UCD Soccer club who are kicking off not only the Harding Cup today but with great excitement kick off a new season of the Airtricity league. UCD play Shelbourne FC at 7.45pm in the UCD Bowl. To add to the commotion, they have the quarter final of the Intermediate Cup against Maynooth tomorrow night.
Don't forget the College boys are back in action on Tuesday following their terrific win in the Collingwood Cup to attempt the double in the Colleges League final against UCC in Home Farm. 4.00pm. Will be def worth the trip across!!
Next up; Basketball! There are only 3 games left in the season with a home game on the 3rd of March...it is going to come down to the wire with UCD back top of the table but only 3 points ahead of Tralee and Swords who are joint second. We're up to Belfast Star, 8.00pm in the Methodist College.
On the international stage, the 6 Nations is back and Head Coach Noel McNamara has named the Ireland U20s side, sponsored by PwC, to face Wales tomorrow in Donnybrook. Tommy O'Brien has been named as Captain and joining him on the team sheet is Harry Byrne, Charlie Ryan and Ronan Foley.
The senior counterparts will host Wales at the Aviva Stadium in this round three of the 6 Nations on Saturday. UCD's Andrew Porter has been named to start his first Six Nations Championship match. UCD team mate James Ryan is named in the second row, Dan Leavy at back row and Rob Kearney is at fullback! Well done boys!
Leinster are also in action tomorrow night in the Guinness PRO14 and Head Coach Leo Cullen has named his match day 23 to take on the Southern Kings in the RDS Arena. After his debut off the bench last week against the Scarlets, Skerries man Ciarán Frawley has been named to start at outhalf by Cullen for the first time. Lining out tomorrow night will be Barry Daly, Garry Ringrose, Ciarán Frawley, Nick McCarthy, Ed Byrne, Josh Murphy, Will Connors, James Tracy, Ross Molony and Peadar Timmins. Some number of UCD reps out there!
Hockey are up next and its Irish Senior Cup weekend! UCD are in the quarter final of the Senior Cup and meet Lurgan at 2.30pm on Saturday.
