The Presidents Awards for excellence in students activities were presented to students at a ceremony on Friday 9th March in O’Reilly Hall. In total there were 16 Presidents Awards presented by Professor Mark Rogers, with President Professor Andrew Deeks unable to attend, to students representing sports clubs, societies, work with the students union and college life.
The students were nominated by their peers or staff within their respective area for their exceptional contribution to student life and activities, for giving back to UCD through life outside the classroom.
The UCD sports recipients were Tadhg O’Leary, Chloe Mustaki, Will Byrne and Tommy O’Brien.
Tadhg O’Leary is the manager of UCD RFC Student Tag Rugby which provides this form of rugby for nearly 500 students. He is tireless in the organising and directing of this recreational activity which he does almost entirely on his own. This is all done with great enthusiasm and efficiency and the outstanding success of the activity is a testament to Tadhg’s remarkable organisational and management abilities.
Will Byrne has brought the UCD Boat Club from strength to strength with numerous fleet wins including intervarsity success and podium positions at SYWOC. While Commodore he oversaw the UCD Event of the Year, IUSA Inter-varsities 2017, ran a fundraising mini team racing event, revamped the club boat shed, sent teams to SYWOC and LPCC, initiated an alumni database, and improved the financial status of the club to such an extent that they could get a new fleet of boats. William is the epitome of the word dedication.
Chloe Mustaki From the highs of captaining her country in the European Soccer Championships and lining out for UCD Waves in the Aviva Stadium to the unimaginable lows and unbelievable strength in battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Chloe has been an inspiration to everyone who knows her.
Tommy O’Brien was awarded a Sports Scholarship on entry to UCD in September 2016 and was subsequently awarded an Ad Astra scholarship for 2017/18. He was selected to captain Ireland U20XV for the 2017/18 6 Nations Championship but despite his international commitments, he has also been a very committed member of the UCD Rugby Club, attending matches and supporting the squad even when he was unavailable for selection.
Tommy was unfortunately unable to attend the awards ceremony as he was preparing to Captain Ireland U20's in the 6 Nations against Italy in Donnybrook that night.
Congratulations to all the students.
