UCD Athletic's runners both take home Bronze

06 Mar 2019

The weekend proved very successful for UCD Athletics as UCD Ad Astra alumni Ciara Mageean and current UCD Ad Astra Scholar Mark English both took home a medal at the European Indoor Championship. The two athletes were competing in the 1500m and 800m respectively and put in an incredible effort to secure a medal.

Mageean, a recent UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science graduate, was just pipped for a silver medal and ran a time of 4:09.43.

While speaking to RTE Sport immediately after the race she said "I am very disappointed I don't have silver right now", showing the desire and high expectations that she places on herself.

This was the first Indoor European Championship medal won by the UCD Athletics star and joins pride of place with the outdoor bronze medal she won in 2016.

Former UCD Athletics Club Captain Richard Owens with Mark English following the 800m final.

English, who had his semi-final race scuppered, won his appeal to be placed on the starting line for the 800m final. Racing in a time of 1:47.39 in the final, the current UCD School of Medicine student was delighted the effort being put in training is now reaping rewards.

"It gives me a lot of confidence that the training I’ve been doing has actually been working,” English told RTE Sport.

This is the Ad Astra Scholar's third European medal at 800m, following bronze and silver in Zurich and Prague respectively.

Everyone at UCD Sport congratulates Ciara and Mark on their latest achievements.
