UCD Presidents Awards for Excellence in Students Activities presented to 15 students

29 Mar 2019

The President's Awards for Excellence in Students Activities were presented to students at a ceremony on Friday March 8th in O’Reilly Hall.

In total there were 15 awards presented by UCD President Professor Andrew Deeks, to students representing sports clubs, societies, work with the students union and college life. Each year the award provides recognition for those students who excel in extracurricular activities of a kind that make UCD an exciting, interesting, dynamic and humane place to live, study and work.

The ceremony takes place as an integral part of the University Awards Ceremony, held in O’Reilly Hall in March of each year. Recipients of awards, typically, are heavily engaged in service to UCD societies, clubs or the Students’ Union, are involved in support services for fellow students or have excelled in competitive activity in the University or in inter-varsity events. To date over 300 students have had their efforts recognised at the awards.

The objective of the UCD President’s Awards scheme has been to give recognition to the efforts of students in areas of University life other than the academic, particularly where those efforts provide the leadership, commitment and energy which help to turn UCD into a lively, engaged university community. Students were nominated by their peers or staff within their respective area for their exceptional contribution to student life and activities, for giving back to UCD through life outside the classroom.

The UCD Sport recipient for 2019 was UCD Karate Captain Callum Terry.

Callum has been Captain of UCD Karate for the last two years and has spear-headed the rejuvenation of the club. In his final year, Callum was elected to the AUC executive committee; taking on the role of Trips Officer and also Graphic Designer for the International Student Society.

UCD Karate commented on Callum's award:

"UCD Karate today is one of the top karate clubs in the country, as shown by a recent victory at the Intercollegiate cup . Callum Terry has led the club from strength to strength, resulting in an impressive growth in membership numbers, stellar results in national tournaments, as well as team training camps and social evenings to make it feel as much a community as a sports club. He has been at the forefront of these endeavours and it is his commitment to management of the club and his passion for karate that has earned him the well deserved President’s award."

Callum has been an individual who has impacted on the University experience of many students and UCD Sport congratulates him, and all recipients on their awards.
