Rowing Continues, But Off the Water!!

19 Apr 2020

One such club is the UCD Boat Club. Over these few weeks the club has been very busy thanks to online tools such as Slack, Strava, Zoom and ErgWorld which have allowed members to continue training, meeting up and having fun. The focus of the activity has been on the positives of enjoying exercise and healthy squad competition, rather than specific structures/targets. Examples include:

  • Rediscovering other training methods that don’t get the same attention in their usual training programme, such as running.

  • Using Strava for leaderboards and workout challenges.

  • Combining Zoom and ErgWorld which helped the club develop an online environment with live video and leaderboards for erg training at home.

While training from home is very different for the UCD rowers, the Boat Club has created a club-wide online environment where members from each squad can share training and support and encourage each other.

Simple positive emoji reactions from the rest of the squad reminds members that their training efforts are noticed and appreciated.

The club has also taken the opportunity to share knowledge with videos and webinars, highlights include Monday Motivation, Wednesday Workout and Sunday Storytime, which covers different aspects of the club’s history.  Submissions have come from coaches and athletes alike creating a collaborative learning environment.

Webinars have been hosted with alumni and experts whose valuable insights ensure the squad is still learning and eager to get back on the water to put it all into action.

Focused squad discussions on various topics such as time management, motivation techniques and mindfulness have also allowed the group to share, learn and discuss how they are dealing with the lockdown.

While the Boat Club may not be on the water at present, they are ensuring they remain fit and healthy, stay connected and are ready for the time when they can once again meet up at the Boathouse in Islandbridge.
