The Bank of Ireland UCD Athletic Union Council (AUC) Sports Awards were announced tonight on the UCD Sport social media platforms. Given the current Covid 19 restrictions it was not possible to hold the usual gala dinner. However, the AUC decided that it was important to say thank you and recognise the UCD sports men and women from clubs, who through their achievements, have brought prestige and honour to their clubs and to the University this year.
We were honoured to have UCD's Alumni, former hockey scholar and Senior Irish Ladies Hockey Captain Katie Mullan introduce the awards. With the Olympics now only days away we wish Katie, the rest of the Irish hockey team and all of Team Ireland the very best of luck in Tokyo.
A number of special awards were announced. They included:
Ireland U21 and UCD Men’s Soccer star Colm Whelan who was named as the “Dr. Tony O’Neill Sportsperson of the Year”.
The Ladies Hockey Club 1st Team was named the “Elite Team of the Year” following their successes last year in the Irish Senior Cup.
The “Dr. Padraic Conway Memorial Medal” was presented to the GAA’s Martin Doyle.
“The Gerry Horkan Club Administrator of the Year” was presented to Shauna Fitzsimons of the Boat Club.
The TaeKwon Do Club’s Tony Wann Pierce was the recipient of the “Graduate of the Year” and the Trampoline Club received the “Club Inclusion Award”.
Commenting on the sporting achievements the AUC President, Prof. Joe Carthy, said that “Sport is an integral part of student life at UCD and the fact that we have so many students from so many clubs who are not only triumphant at Intervarsity level, but many others taking on the cream of competition nationally and internationally, underlines the quality of our sportsmen and women.
It is important also to give credit to our clubs and particularly the committees of each club who have administered to the needs of their members throughout the year. The continued efforts of clubs to engage with members and support them during the Covid-19 closure is also to be commended and demonstrates the true spirit of collegiality”.
The Dr. Padraic Conway Medal is presented to commemorate the memory of the late Padraic Conway – UCD Vice President for Alumni Relations - who sadly passed away in October 2012. Padraic was a very energetic and dynamic contributor to life at UCD and had a huge passion for sport, particularly GAA and all that it brought to the holistic student experience at UCD.
