Work Placement Programme

UCD is dedicated to the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of the wider community. In fulfilling this role it acts in partnership with organisations in the wider community in an increasing number of mutually beneficial co-operative initiatives. One of the most important areas of such co-operation is in the provision of professional work placement opportunities for undergraduate students in external organisations and companies.

The organisation of sport is a multi-faceted operation involving a variety of partnerships. The partnership experience of the Work Placement Programme is an integral part of the UCD BSc Sport & Exercise Management programme. Students are required to successfully complete a work placement during the summer between Stage 2 and Stage 3.

This module is designed to provide students with work experience in external sports organisations and companies, both at home and abroad. It is an opportunity to put their academic knowledge into practice in the "real world of work" and develop new professional and business skills. The module encourages and enables students to assume greater responsibility for the planning and evaluation of their own learning. It also improves students' prospects of future employment and helps students decide on their career path.

Timing and duration of work placement

The work placement takes place in Stage 2 of the BSc Sport & Exercise Management. During this period students are expected to conform to the normal working hours of the host organisation.

Work Placement Testimonials

The Irish Hockey Association has linked with UCD's Placement Programme for the last three years and has been extremely happy with the calibre, professionalism and hard work of the students that have been placed with us. The placement programme has complimented the work of the IHA, ultimately allowing us to deliver projects that we otherwise would not have the resources to do. We would envisage a relationship with UCD's Placement Programme long into the future.

Fiona Mills, Strategic Development Director, Irish Hockey Association

The International Rugby Board has afforded UCD the opportunity of placing some of the students from the UCD Sport & Exercise Management Programme on periods of work placement with the International Rugby Board. The work placement programme has given students the opportunity to gain experience in the field of sports management with a view to improving student's potential for future employment opportunities in the sports sector, while also affording the IRB an opportunity to work with enthusiastic, motivated and skilled individuals.
