Telephone consultation

You will be contacted on the number you provided by the nurse who will take a medical/sexual history. All the information given and the results are confidential.

The examination

If appropriate a medical examination is performed.

A blood sample is taken to test for Syphilis/HIV/Hepatitis B/ Hepatitis C.

For women, a self-taken vaginal swab is carried out to test for Chlamydia/Gonorrhoea/Trichomonas Vaginalis. A throat swab might also be taken if necessary.

For men, a urine sample is required to test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea. Male patients need a full bladder. Please do not urinate an hour before your appointment. The nurse will then ask you to pass a first void specimen of urine. That means the first 15ml of urine that you pass from your bladder as this gives the most accurate results. Swabs may also be carried out if appropriate.

Your results will be ready in ten days. We will obtain your permission to text you your results if they are normal and to contact you by phone or text message if there are any infections we need to inform you about. It is also possible to come back and discuss your results in person if you prefer this. We do not email the results of medical tests.
