UCD Purl Jam

On March 28 2018, UCD in the Community were very kindly invited to the Land of Plain and Purl to see UCD Purl Jam in action and we are very glad we made the trip!

UCD Purl Jam is a craft/knitting/creative group, established by Catriona Keane (Science student adviser) and Niamh Nestor (Veterinary student adviser) in UCD in September 2017.

Community is at the heart of Purl Jam, with the group's members creating beautiful pieces for various charities and community based organisations. An example of one of the projects is the very popular crocheted octopuses, created for the 'Tentacles for Tinies' initiative of the Rotunda Hospital Dublin. The creativity doesn't stop there, however, with the warm and friendly group of crafters making everything from dog jumpers, to Michael 'Tea' Higgins tea cosies and everything in between!

UCD Purl Jam were delighted to have been awarded with SPARC funding, allowing them to connect with more charities and allow more projects to get underway as part of that. Keep your eyes peeled for knitted knockers and animal jumpers!

The group is open to staff and students, from beginners to experts and runs on Wednesdays and Thursdays (1pm - 2pm) in E0.32, UCD O' Brien Centre for Science (East), next to the Pi restaurant.

Whether you are a complete beginner, or an expert crafter, head along to Purl Jam and get involved in some fantastic projects! There's tea, coffee and biscuits, and we would like to extend our thanks to Niamh, for baking brownies especially for our visit. Much appreciated!

For more information and to see all the wonderful work currently ongoing, check out UCD Purl Jam and keep your eyes peeled for their fabulous exhibitions!
