Mucosal immune responses in murine upper respiratory
tract and lungs following exposure to Mycobacterium bovis BCG
Research involves the investigation of novel aspects of the immune
response to the current vaccine used to protect humans against tuberculosis
(Mycobacterium bovis BCG) using a mouse infection model. Studies
are attempting to elucidate the previously unexamined mucosal immune responses
within upper respiratory tract following intranasal and subcutaneous administration
of the vaccine and following initial and repeat exposure. These responses
will be compared to contemporaneous pulmonary/systemic responses. Comparisons
of the responses could provide important insights into protective mechanisms
and enhance vaccine efficacy.
