WAC-6 TRAVEL SUPPORT

The World Archaeological Congress is committed to making attendance at its meetings as representative of the world's populations as possible. It particularly encourages archaeologists from economically disadvantaged countries and interested members of Indigenous populations to attend its congresses. Toward that end, the President and Executive of WAC have appointed a Travel Support Committee and have allocated limited funds to help underwrite travel by people in these two targeted categories to the Sixth World Archaeological Congress in Dublin, Ireland. Support is available to help with registration, accommodation and partial transportation costs to and from the meeting.

The grant application deadline has now passed.

Call for Applications and Application Procedure

The WAC Travel Support Committee administers the allocation of WAC travel support to WAC-6. The Co-Chairs of this committee are H. Martin Wobst, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, USA, and Alejandro Haber, University of Catamarca, Argentina.

To help a substantial number of people in the targeted categories to attend the WAC Congress, applicants are asked to calculate their expenses as frugally as possible, to contribute personally toward their travel, and to explore additional means of travel support (for example, from their institutions, from foundations, and other fund raising). Students are encouraged to apply, but will need to demonstrate that they are actively participating in the conference, such as through the presentation of a paper or a poster. The deadline for applications is February 22nd 2008. The sooner the Travel Support Committee knows of all of the needs for financial support, the more accurately we can estimate how to distribute the funds most equitably. Also, in many cases, the sooner you make your reservations, the less expensive your travel will be. The sooner you apply, the greater the chance that some funds for travel support will be available. Allocated funds will be made available early in 2008.

Applications can be submitted in either Spanish or English. People who wish to apply in other languages can seek translation support from their WAC regional representative, or through WAC directly. However, we ask people to submit in English or Spanish, if possible, as this makes for a smoother application process. If you would like to apply please complete the on-line form, however, if you have any problems completing the on-line application please contact H. Martin Wobst, Co. Chair Travel support committee.

If your application is complete, the co-chairs will review your application, and consult with other members of the committee, as necessary.

The membership of this committee is broadly regional. In alphabetical order by last name, its members are: Raymond Assombong (Central Africa, Cameroon); Bayo Folorunso (Western Africa, Nigeria); Alejandro Haber, Co-Chair (Southern America, Argentina); Dorothy Lippert (Indigenous, Northern America, US); Arek Marciniak (Northern Europe, Poland); Sven Ouzman (Southern Africa, South Africa); Rasmi Shoocongdej (Southeastern Asia, Thailand); and H. Martin Wobst, Co-Chair (Northern America, US). The final funding decisions are made by the co-chairs. Applications will be accepted as long as funds are available. The decisions of the Travel Support Committee are binding and will be announced to the applicants by the Co-Chairs of the Committee.

We hope to see you at WAC-6!
