Medicine

UCD School of Medicine offers a (opens in a new window)Graduate Entry Medicine programme with funding from the Higher Education Authority (HEA) for Irish/EU students. It is expected that there will be 77 places available. This intensive, focused course is designed for students with an undergraduate degree who wish to pursue a career in medicine.

UCD Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) provides an innovative, science-driven and patient-centred curriculum, delivered by world-class educators in state-of-the-art facilities. The main hospitals associated with our programme are St Vincent’s University Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. In addition, there are more than 20 other training hospitals and more than 120 primary care practices that facilitate your learning. 

Non-EU Applicants

EU Applicants

To be eligible for consideration you must hold, or expect to hold by July prior to entry, a minimum 2.1 Honours (Second Class Honours, Grade One) result in your first Honours bachelor degree (NFQ Level 8) awarded. The degree can be in any discipline. 

A valid GAMSAT score is also required. 

Important Note: applicants who qualify to apply for Graduate Entry to Medicine (DN401) will not be eligible to apply through the mature years entry route.

Non-EU Applicants

EU Applicants

EU applicants must apply via the (opens in a new window)Central Applications Office (CAO) to DN401 Graduate Entry Medicine. The normal application closing date is 1 February prior to entry. Late applications are accepted up to 1 May.

All previous third level attendance(s) must be declared on your CAO application – please see Transfer Restrictions - All Applicants for further information.

Applicants who meet the degree eligibility requirement (e.g. presenting a minimum 2.1 Hons in your first level 8 NFQ Bachelor degree) then compete on the basis of their GAMSAT scores only.

About GAMSAT

You must register to sit the GAMSAT (Graduate Australian Medical School Admission Test). The GAMSAT-Ireland test is held in March each year.

GAMSAT results have a currency of two years. For graduate entry to Medicine in 2026, only results from the following GAMSAT sittings are acceptable: September 2024, March 2025, September 2025, and March 2026. (Results of the September 2026 test cannot be used for courses commencing in 2026).

For your GAMSAT results to be forwarded to the CAO by ACER, you must indicate on your GAMSAT registration for any of these sittings, that you are an applicant to an Irish programme. You must also provide your correct 2026 CAO application number in your GAMSAT account. Failure to do so may affect the delivery of your GAMSAT results to the CAO and the institutions.

Important: If you are presenting GAMSAT UK or GAMSAT Australia results then you must provide these to the CAO when submitting your application.

ACER, the graduate-entry schools or the admissions authorities do not recommend or endorse any particular texts or preparation courses, nor do they support any commercially available preparation courses or have any association with commercial courses.

Graduate entry programmes are not part of the “Free Fees" Initiative. Please see the UCD Fees website for full information about fees for this programme. This is an level 8 (NFQ) undergraduate degree programme so the undergraduate fees rules apply.

If you were born in, have at any time resided in or hold citizenship of a country outside of the EU/EEA/Swiss Confederation/UK, you must complete a formal fee status assessment for UCD. You must complete this process in good time prior to the application closing date. Further information about this process, including a checklist of required supporting documentation, is available on the UCD Fees website.
