Abstract:
Using the Fitting decomposition of an endomorphism, we show how it is easy to derive a formula for the number of nilpotent n x n matrices over a finite field. We also show how the formula can be modified to obtain the number of nilpotent n x n matrices of a specified rank over a finite field.
