Subspaces of matrices containing no elements of rank 1, or no elements of rank 1 or 2

Abstract:
We investigate subspaces of matrices over a field K which are of maximal dimension with respect to containing no elements of rank 1. We also investigate subspaces of symmetric matrices which are of maximal dimension with respect to containing no elements of rank 1 or 2. The partial answers obtained show connections with the existence of common zeros of systems of quadratic forms or semifields over K.
