Abstract

The Atlantic Marine Energy Test Site (AMETS) is being developed near Belmullet, Co. Mayo, by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland as the final proving ground for WECs to display their suitability for deployment in the challenging conditions typical of exposed, open ocean locations. This research utilises the data collected from an ongoing measurement campaign and a sixteen year SWAN model to characterise the wave energy resource at the site and to demonstrate the variability that exists in the measured spectral shapes, with reference to the influence this may have on device performance. Comparisons will be made between AMETS and Galway Bay to highlight the degree of scalability that exists between the wave regimes at Ireland's real sea test facilities. Finally, some extreme wave conditions recorded at the Belmullet site will be presented.
