Development of novel foundation systems for offshore wind turbines

Speaker: Dr. Kenneth Gavin, School of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, UCD

Time: 2.00 PM

Date: Monday 11th March 2013

Location: Merrion Seminar Room (ground floor, Block 9-10 Nexus UCD, Belfield Office Park)

Abstract:

The Geotechnical Research Group at UCD is engaged in research to develop improved design techniques and understand the fundamental engineering response of offshore foundation systems. This includes testing prototype scale foundations at the UCD test bed site located in Blessington, County Wicklow and instrumentation of full-scale structures such as the Keystone MET MAST installed by Mainstream Renewable Power (MRP) in the North Sea. This presentation will summarise some of the challenges facing industry in moving to the use of larger turbine in deeper water. The types of foundation concepts being considered are presented and uncertainties highlighted. An overview of the projects the group are involved with industrial partners including DONG, MRP, SIEMENS and Shell will be presented. Potential areas of collaborative research are discussed.
