Ireland secures seat on FIGO council 2023-2025. Congratulations Prof Fionualla McAuliffe.

Congratulations to Professor Fionnuala McAuliffe who has been elected onto the Executive Council of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO). FIGO, with member societies in 139 countries/territories, is the only organisation that brings together professional societies of obstetricians and gynecologists on a global basis. This position on FIGO Council is a key achievement and gives Ireland a global voice in women’s health, with significant potential to improve the health of women and girls worldwide.

FIGO’s vision is for women to achieve the highest possible standards of physical, mental, reproductive and sexual health and wellbeing throughout their lives. Ireland will contribute though the development of clinically relevant guidelines and easy to use clinical toolkits, and through the promotion of optimal nutrition in high, middle and low income countries.

Head of Women's and Child's Health, Fionnuala McAuliffe is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at National Maternity Hospital Dublin and Director of the UCD Perinatal Research Centre.

Prof McAuliffe graduated from UCD and following initial training in Dublin, moved to the UK. At King's College Hospital, London, she did a fellowship in Fetal Medicine and subsequently undertook Maternal and Fetal subspecialisation at Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. Professor McAuliffe returned to UCD and the National Maternity Hospital where she is a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and a sub-specialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine.

Professor McAuliffe is Director of the Maternal and Fetal Medicine Subspecialisation Programme and a lead for the Maternal Medicine services. She is the Head of Women's and Child's Health and Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at UCD and Fellow at UCD Conway Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Science. She holds fellowships at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists UK. Professor McAuliffe was appointed as UCD Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 2014, succeeding Emeritus Professor Colm O'Herlihy.

Professor McAuliffe's research interests centre on diabetes and nutrition in pregnancy, maternal and fetal medicine and in 2017 she established UCD Perinatal Research Centre. Her research is supported by grants from Health Research Board Ireland and the European Union and Science Foundation Ireland.
