Relay for Life
UCD Students are holding 'Relay for Life' in conjunction with the Irish Cancer Society on 9th - 10th April 2014. The aim of ‘Relay for Life’ is to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society, to raise awareness about cancer and to show support and solidarity with individuals and their families who have been affected by the disease.
The event is a 24 hour relay which takes place on Devlin GAA pitch in UCD from 2pm until 2pm the following day. Teams of 10-20 students will camp out on the pitches with alternating people from each team walking around the track throughout the day and night. This is the third year that the event has been held on campus and we are hoping that this time it will be bigger and better than ever.
'Relay for Life' opens with a Survivors Lap. We invite team members or their family and friends who have suffered from cancer to walk a lap of honour in celebration of them. This is a hopeful and inspirational way to start the event. If you know of anyone who would be interested in taking part please email firstname.lastname@example.org
The Candle of Hope Ceremony takes place at approximately 7pm. Candle bags will be on sale to team members in advance of the event in memory or in celebration of their loved ones who have been affected by cancer. At dusk these bags will line the pitch and will be lit. There will be three laps of silence as a mark of respect to the individual names on the candle bags.
