In association with our U21 Health Sciences partners, the School hosts hosted the UN Sustainable Development Goals Awareness Week. The events take place at 5pm daily from 4 - 7 Apr 16 in the UCD Health Sciences Centre. The event will feature a number of keynote talks from academics and students addressing Goal 3 of the SDGs: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. All welcome.
Dr Alan Phillips, Global Head of Biostatistics, ICON Clinical Research will deliver a workshop on Regulatory Statistics on Thur, 7 Apr 16 from 2 - 5pm in the ICON Lecture Theatre, UCD O’Brien Science Centre. Topics will include key trends and issues in Clinical Trial biostatistics including regulatory requirements, statistical concepts and trial design and adaptive trial design.

The Palliative Care in Neurodegeneration Workshop will be hosted by UCC School of Medicine on 27 May 16 in the Kingsley Hotel, Cork. It will bring researchers together from multiple disciplines to discuss ‘Palliative care in Neurodegeneration, with a focus on dementia’, using multiple approaches to optimise networking opportunities and cross-discipline learning. Applications for poster competition and travel bursaries are invited from early career researchers in any related discipline with an application deadline of 5 pm, Tue, 3 May 16.

The 2016 Clinical Commencement Ceremony will take place on the evening of Wed 10 Feb 16 at UCD O'Reilly Hall for medical students entering their final years of clinical training. The Department of General Practice at University College Dublin is delighted to host the 2016 Joint Annual Scientific Meeting of the Association of Departments of General Practice in Ireland & the Irish College of General Practice. Due to clinical MRI’s high magnetic field strengths, the potential hazards associated leads to an ongoing need to screen patients for metallic intra-orbital foreign bodies. With this in mind UCD Radiography & Diagnostic Imaging will host a study day, targeted towards all medical professional, with a view to share the knowledge and skills in this area. The study day features guest speakers and hands-on practical sessions.

The 2nd Irish Geriatric Oncology Meeting will be held in Dublin on Sat, 9 Apr 16 at the Radisson Blu Golden Lane, Dublin 8. This meeting will bring together an audience comprising geriatricians, surgical, medical and radiation oncologists and allied health professionals with an interest in this field as well as a faculty of national and international experts. Medicine and Veterinary Medicine students are invited to two workshops that have been organised for this year's One Health Week. On Tuesday, April 12th at 11am, Dr Sue Rackard and Prof Ronan Cahill will be giving a tutorial about suturing in human and veterinary medicine. On Wednesday, April 13th at 6.30pm, Dr Kilroy will be giving a short presentation about similarities and differences in human and animal anatomy. Students will have 20-30 minutes to examine specimens and models from both Anatomy Departments. Space is limited for both practicals.
As part of the routine University Quality Assurance processes, the School is undertaking its periodic Quality Review during the academic year 2015/2016. A fundamental part of this School Quality Review is a visit by the External Review Group. This visit is scheduled to take place over the four days from 12th - 15th April 2016. Entitled The Patient Voice in Cancer Research, this event features discussions concerning placing survivorship at the heart of the cancer research agenda and is organised by UCD Medicine Research, UCD Conway Institute, Systems Biology Ireland & BREAST-PREDICT in conjunction with Relay for Life UCD & the Irish Cancer Society. Prof Richard J Ablin (University of Arizona) will present a seminar entitled 'Prostate Cancer: In Search of the Holy Grail' on Thurs 12 May 16 at 4:00pm in the UCD Conway Lecture Theatre. Professor Ablin discovered the prostate-specific antigen in 1970. He has been an outspoken critic of the widespread use of PSA in prostate cancer screening and has argued that the use of the PSA test may lead to overdiagnosis and overtreatment.

The 2016 Dr Jack Flanagan Medal Compeition in Geriatric Medicine takes place on Wed 26 Oct 16 from 7-9:30pm in the UCD Catherine McAuley Centre at Mater Hospital. Named after Ireland's first geriatrician, this intervarsity competition sees teams of final year Medical Students from across the country compete in a clinical case conference assessing knowledge of medical and psychiatric problems associated with ageing.
